Customs &Traditions

This module offers a deep dive into the vibrant customs, traditions, and cultural practices of Roma communities, including their music, dance, crafts, and unique celebrations. Participants will explore how these traditions vary between Roma subgroups and their cultural significance. The module also highlights how these practices are preserved and adapted in modern contexts, encouraging participants to celebrate Roma culture in a meaningful way.

Challenges facing Roma people

This module delves into the social, economic, and cultural barriers Roma communities face, including systemic discrimination, housing instability, unemployment, and challenges accessing education and healthcare. Participants will work on understanding these issues in depth and explore strategies to promote equality and inclusion for Roma individuals in society.

Stereotypes

This module addresses the roots and impacts of stereotypes about the Roma community, examining how they perpetuate discrimination and exclusion. Participants will learn to identify bias in media, language, and institutional practices. Through discussions and case studies, learners will reflect on their own assumptions and be equipped with strategies to challenge stereotypes and promote more accurate, positive narratives.

Roma in Secondary schools

Focusing on education, this module highlights the specific challenges Roma students face in secondary schools, such as cultural differences, language barriers, and discrimination. Participants will explore strategies to engage Roma students and their families, improve attendance and academic performance, and build a school culture that embraces diversity. Practical examples and success stories are shared to inspire change.

Roma Language 

The Roma language is a crucial part of the community’s identity and heritage. In this module, participants will explore the language’s origins, its various dialects, and its role in preserving cultural unity. The session includes an introduction to common Roma words and phrases, helping participants appreciate the language’s importance in daily life and traditions.

Family & Belonging

Family and community are at the heart of Roma culture. This module focuses on the significance of these values and how they foster a sense of belonging. Participants will learn about traditional family structures, communal living, and how Roma people maintain strong social ties. This knowledge is key to understanding how decisions are made and how to engage with Roma families respectfully and effectively.

CSE in Roma communities

This module raises awareness of Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) within Roma communities, examining cultural sensitivities and risk factors that may increase vulnerability. Participants will learn about safeguarding practices, how to work collaboratively with families, and approaches to educating communities about CSE prevention. The session focuses on protecting children while respecting cultural values.

Inclusive Practice

This practical module equips participants with tools and techniques to create welcoming and inclusive spaces for Roma individuals. From culturally sensitive communication to adapting policies and practices, learners will develop the skills to foster trust and promote equity. Participants will leave with actionable steps for creating environments that value and respect Roma perspectives.

History & Heritage

Participants will journey through the history of the Roma people, from their origins in Northern India to their migration across the globe. This module covers key events such as persecution during the Holocaust, discrimination in Europe, and their contributions to society. Learners will build a comprehensive understanding of how historical experiences have shaped Roma identity and resilience today.

Understanding traditional roles 

Participants will explore the traditional roles within Roma families, such as gender roles, generational expectations, and the influence of elders within decision-making. The module also examines how these roles vary between families and how modernisation impacts these structures. Learners will gain a deeper understanding of the values that guide Roma relationships and the importance of respecting these dynamics in professional and personal settings.
